Imagine a safer neighborhood where children can play freely without the worry of speeding cars rushing by. This vision is set to become a reality in a town in Norfolk, as plans for implementing a 20mph speed limit on several local roads move forward after years of anticipation.
Officials at Norfolk County Council are now taking steps to officially enforce this speed restriction on three specific streets in King's Lynn, highlighting the need for increased safety in this residential area. The roads affected by this new speed limit include Orchard Crescent, Winter Nelis Way, and Victoria Close, all of which are part of a housing development that emerged from Lynnsport Way back in 2019.
Originally designed to encourage drivers to adhere to a 20mph speed limit, these roads saw the installation of informative signs in 2021. However, it has only recently become possible to enforce the limit through formal orders from the council.
It's not uncommon for newly developed residential areas to have speed limit signs installed prior to obtaining the necessary traffic orders for enforcement. According to guidance from the Department for Transport, both 20mph zones and speed limits should be constructed in such a way that they are 'generally self-enforcing,' taking into account factors like road conditions, signage, and traffic calming measures.
Interestingly, Norfolk Police have previously indicated that they do not regularly enforce these 20mph limits. Nonetheless, they have stated that they will take action if there is "clear evidence of significant non-compliance or a history of injury collisions that warrants such enforcement."
Currently, Norfolk County Council is inviting public feedback on the proposed orders, with a deadline for comments set for Tuesday, February 24. Those wishing to voice their opinions or objections must submit their views in writing, clearly outlining the reasons for their stance.
