When evaluating EVs, two critical factors stand out: charging and price. The North American Charging Standard (NACS) port has become a must-have, offering more charging options and convenience. As for price, I believe a practical budget of under $50,000 is reasonable, especially with modern connectivity features becoming standard.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 (2026)
Hyundai's Ioniq 5 offers a unique blend of futuristic and retro designs. With a built-in NACS port, remote charging control via the Bluelink+ app, and digital keys, it's a strong contender. Starting at $35,000, it provides an estimated range of 245-318 miles, making it an attractive option for those seeking a blend of style and functionality.
Kia EV6 (2025)
The Kia EV6, with over 300 miles of range, is more of a sedan but offers versatility with a tow hitch. Priced at $46,000, it includes over-the-air software updates, wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot option. The Kia app provides remote control and digital key sharing, although the upsells for additional features might be a turn-off for some.
Toyota bZ XLE (2026)
Toyota's bZ XLE is an intriguing entry, offering over 300 miles of range for under $40,000. The Toyota app provides remote connectivity, but the three-year trial subscription raises concerns about future costs. With wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, it's a solid choice, but the potential for additional charges down the line is a consideration.

The Rivian R2 is an exciting prospect, especially for those seeking a smaller alternative to the Tesla Model Y. With a base model offering over 300 miles of range for $45,000, it's a compelling option. However, the lowest-priced version won't be available until 2027, which might be a deal-breaker for some. The R2 offers all the tech niceties Rivian is known for, but the lack of CarPlay and Android Auto might be a surprise to some buyers.
BMW iX3 (Summer 2026)
BMW's iX3 skirts the $50,000 mark but offers impressive features. With a starting price of around $60,000, it can provide up to 400 miles of range. Future versions planned for 2027 might bring the price down, making it an even more attractive option. BMW's high ranking in PCMag's Readers' Choice survey adds to its appeal.

The Perfect EV for Me
After reviewing the market, it's clear that while Rivian offers an attractive full tech stack and connectivity, Kia and Hyundai provide excellent value for money. With Honda exiting the EV space, the race for my next EV seems to be between these two manufacturers.
