This weekend, a youth basketball tournament in a small town received an unexpected highlight when a former WNBA player made a special appearance to share her experiences.
In Pierce, Nebraska, during the Zion Lutheran Roundball Tournament on Saturday, Brittney Wilkins, a Nebraska native and former WNBA athlete, delivered an inspiring keynote address. She opened up about her journey in professional basketball and the various challenges she faced along the way.
Although the young audience members were likely unaware of Wilkins' playing days from 2006 to 2008, she emphasized that the difficulties encountered in sports remain remarkably similar across generations. "Growing up, the WNBA was still quite new, you know?" Wilkins explained. "These kids are experiencing a different landscape now, as the WNBA has grown significantly. For many of them, seeing a real live WNBA player, especially if they haven't attended a game before, is a big deal. I wasn’t a superstar on my team, but being part of it and understanding my role was crucial. These kids are learning that even in their fifth and sixth grade teams, they go through comparable experiences."
Having grown up in Arlington, Wilkins understands what it means to come from a small town, and many of the children in attendance resonated with her story. Fifth grader Harper Warneke shared her thoughts, saying, "It was good. As a basketball and volleyball player, it really motivated me to see someone from a small town accomplish so much."
Wilkins emphasized the importance of cultivating a growth mindset, reminding the young athletes that being a successful player involves more than just natural talent; it also requires hard work, dedication, and a commitment to continuous improvement. This emphasis on character development and resilience is something that can benefit young athletes far beyond the basketball court.
