Heathrow Scraps 100ml Liquid Limit! Travel Smarter with New Scanners (2026)

A breakthrough for travelers! Heathrow Airport, the UK's largest, has finally bid farewell to the notorious 100ml liquid limit in cabin bags. This long-overdue change is part of a £1 billion tech upgrade, featuring advanced scanners that revolutionize the security process.

The restrictions, which have been in place since 2006 after a foiled bomb plot, required passengers to meticulously organize their toiletries and electronics in clear bags. Now, with the new CT scanners, passengers can keep their liquids and laptops in their bags, providing a 3D image of the contents for security checks.

But here's the catch: While this rule change is a game-changer for Heathrow, it only applies to flights departing from the airport. So, if you're traveling internationally, be aware that the return journey might have different rules. Travel experts advise checking airport restrictions before boarding return flights to the UK.

The impact of this change is significant. Heathrow estimates that the new scanners will save almost 16 million plastic bags annually, a huge environmental benefit.

The journey to this upgrade has been a long one. The original deadline for large UK airports to install these scanners was December 2022, but the pandemic disrupted aviation, pushing the deadline to June 2024. Even then, the deadline was missed, and the government ordered airports that had dropped the 100ml limit to reinstate it.

And this is the part most people miss: Some British airports, like London City, Luton, and Teesside, have the new scanners but still enforce the 100ml limit, pending regulatory approval. So, while progress is being made, the situation remains complex and ever-evolving.

So, what do you think? Are you relieved by these changes, or do you think they're still too restrictive? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
