London Cafe Battle: Inside the Takeover Controversy (2026)

London's Cafe Takeover: A Tale of Two Views

The battle for control of popular park cafes in North London has sparked a heated debate, with one businesswoman at the center of the storm. Prue Freeman, owner of Daisy Green, has faced a barrage of criticism and legal challenges since her company was chosen to manage three cafes previously operated by Hoxton Beach. The City of London Corporation's decision to award the tender to Daisy Green has ignited a controversy that has divided the community.

In an exclusive interview with The Standard, Freeman, an Australian entrepreneur, defended her company's selection, arguing that the tendering process was fair and transparent. She emphasized that their bid was not solely based on financial offers but also on their commitment to community projects and the London Living Wage.

"We were given the same criteria as everyone else, and our tender showcased our dedication to community initiatives," Freeman explained. "Investment was necessary, but our focus was on the positive impact we could have on the area."

However, the situation has taken a turn when Hoxton Beach's co-owner, Emma Fernandez, spoke out. She expressed frustration over the lack of communication and guidance from the landlord, stating that their livelihood is at stake. The tenancy agreement, known as 'at will', has been a point of contention, as it limits their ability to secure bank loans for improvements.

The City of London Corporation, the entity overseeing the park cafes, defended their decision, claiming it was a fair and open process involving 30 bids. They also mentioned the involvement of the Heath Consultative Committee, representing local groups and stakeholders.

This isn't the first time these cafes have been involved in a similar dispute. In 2016, Benugo was awarded the tender but withdrew due to public backlash. The controversy surrounding these cafes highlights the complex dynamics of business ownership and the power struggles that can arise.
