Mike Forde, managing director of communications, explained that it didn't feel fair for teams to strategize solely for the fastest lap, and the rule change aims to preserve the spirit of competition.

Other Major Changes for 2026:
1. Penalty Structure for Lug Nuts: A new penalty system for loose or missing lug nuts has been introduced in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and Craftsman Truck Series. Teams will lose pit selection for the next race if 19 out of 20 lug nuts are secure, face a fine and crew member suspension for 18 secure lug nuts, and a race disqualification for four missing lug nuts. This is a significant change from previous fines and suspensions for crew chiefs.
OEM Provisionals: NASCAR is offering up to four additional spots for OEM provisionals in the first three Craftsman Truck Series races this season, as Ram returns to the sport. This rule aims to support Ram teams in their initial stages, similar to the Open Exemption Provisional, but with points awarded for finishes. However, this has sparked discussions about fairness, especially with the potential advantage for renowned drivers.
Minimum Age Reduction: NASCAR has lowered the minimum age for competing on 1.25-mile and shorter tracks in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series to 17 years old, bridging the gap between the Truck Series (16) and Cup Series (18).
