Unai Emery has issued a challenge to Liverpool regarding the transfer stipulations surrounding Harvey Elliott's loan deal, following a notable shift in his role at Aston Villa.
Harvey Elliott made his move to Aston Villa on the final day of the summer transfer window, but up until recently, he had only participated in seven matches for the team. However, he has now played in the last two fixtures, marking a significant turnaround. The 22-year-old midfielder put in a full 90 minutes during Villa's thrilling 3-2 Europa League victory against RB Salzburg and made a substitute appearance in last weekend's narrow 1-0 loss to Brentford.
Before this recent revival, Elliott's last match for Villa was a brief stint in a 2-0 win over Feyenoord on October 2, which contributed to a total of just five appearances in 2025 since his loan from Liverpool, with an eye on securing a permanent transfer.
Notably, the £35 million permanent transfer clause would only activate after Elliott appeared in ten games for Villa, a milestone many expected would be easily achieved at the time of his signing. Yet, Emery had shown hesitation in selecting him until this recent change of heart. Currently, Villa is missing key players due to injuries—including midfielders Boubacar Kamara, Youri Tielemans, and John McGinn, as well as forward Ollie Watkins—creating an urgent need for depth in their squad.
During a press conference ahead of the upcoming match against Bournemouth, Emery discussed Elliott's prospects and placed the responsibility back on Liverpool, suggesting that the club could remove the clauses that currently restrict his playing time. He also appeared to downplay the likelihood of a permanent acquisition at this stage.
"I spoke with him," Emery stated. "We have to be fair because there are two aspects to consider: one is the sporting side, and the other is the business side. We are striving for fairness in this situation, as we are actively trying to integrate him into the team.
"I told him that I’ve had several discussions with Harvey. At this point, I am opening the door for him to contribute to our gameplay, as he has the potential to assist us significantly. However, this is not solely my decision; it also hinges on Liverpool's choice to remove the clauses linked to his match appearances and any potential purchase.
"I assured him that he will have the opportunity to play here because it’s a sporting decision, but it has now evolved into both a sporting and a business decision. My sporting judgment remains: he deserves to play, and we need his talents on the pitch. But ultimately, Liverpool has control over these clauses, and I made that clear to him. It would be fair for him if Liverpool were to lift those restrictions."
Emery went on to reveal that conversations about modifying the clause in Elliott's agreement have been ongoing, while he commended the player for his performance and dedication in recent weeks.
"We have been discussing the possibility of removing the clause, but that conversation isn’t happening right now," he explained. "We began these talks about three months ago. The transfer window has now closed as of Monday.
"It would be fair for him, as he is a composed individual, a great person, and a truly excellent professional. His skills are evident. He must be on the field, and he is genuinely passionate about playing. I recognize that we are hindering his progress by adhering to the existing agreement with Liverpool, and I am making decisions responsibly on my end. If Liverpool decides to remove this clause, it could open new opportunities for him. If they choose not to, then that’s their decision."
